The Council's youth engagement project included the proposal to erect a new youth shelter on Shelley Recreation Ground, due to the lack of provision in this area for the age group 10 - 14 year olds, particularly of girls.  The pictures show the different elevations and the proposed location (indicated by a white star), which would replace the old seat currently in place.  It is slightly down the hill and has been selected as it is away from the old people's bungalows but at the same time, not too far from the younger children's play area.  In this way, it is not isolated from other users of the recreation ground, but will hopefully not cause a problem for the senior citizens living in the vicinity.

The whole idea came from young people on the School Councils for Kirkburton Middle School, Shelley Middle School and Shelley College.  The designs themselves were produced by a 6th form student hoping to study architecture at university.  They have received approval from Kirklees Engineers and Leisure Service Managers, who commended the design and made only minimal changes to ensure that it complied with the BS standards.
