1000 Fruit Trees

The 4-year fruit tree project has now been completed.  The trees have been planted all across the Parish and proved to be an exceptionally popular project.  Villagers, community groups, allotment tenants and school children all enthusiastically embraced the project and enjoyed working together with the Councillors to plant a variety of fruit trees.

Some trees were also donated free of charge to those village associations who wanted to distribute them onto their local residents in exchange for a donation.  The associations were permitted to retain the monies raised to help towards the costs of their own projects.

We are very grateful to everyone who took part in the scheme and made it such a success.  We would also like to extend our thanks to the officers at Kirklees Leisure Services, especially Julian Faulkener, who helped by advising on the best varieties to use in the different locations and checking the land for underground cables.  He also came to some of the planting events and gave us lots of practical help, for which we are very grateful.

The Parish Council is pleased that the project was so successful as everyone seemed to get so much enjoyment out of it, and also because increasing the amount of locally grown food is beneficial for everyone.  It reduces 'food miles' and it also increases the amount of biodiversity in this area.  This ensures that the natural balance of wildlife is maintained.  But most of all, it tastes so much better.

So a big Thank You to everyone involved!
